But I need a tan too!

This last Friday Cali Color Spray Tanning went out to Cisco's in Westlake to promote along side the Miss Ca Pageant. I was very excited and wanted to look my best. Of course that includes being tanned.. The whole 2 1/2 weeks prior to Fridays event thought I was just so busy! Which is great, but not for my tan.. I was still tanned, but I like to be 2 shades away from Jersey Shore dark. Anyway Patrick, who normally tans me was up in Santa Barbara and Jessica is still in training. What is a girl to do?!
So that is when I remembered a tan mitt I received with the tan extender inventory.

Amber Sun Norvell sunless mitt. I had never used one, but on my way out of the salon on Friday I grabbed one. With only three hours until the event started I was getting a little panicky! The instructions were easy. Shower. No lotion. Same prep as for a spray tan. Except this is a little mitt you slip your hand into and rub all over your body.

To my surprise it really worked! (I know, why is the owner of a spray tanning salon encouraging the use of a self tanner?) Well, here is the catch, it only lasts until your shower. So as soon as I got back that night and showered the tan was gone, but it was perfect for the little touch up in between my tanning sessions. I think that this would be great to keep for use in between tans. It doesn't go on very dark, but gives a little boost of color! Good Luck!

What is Dihydroxyacetone? (DHA)

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA)  is a simple carbohydrate that is primarily used as an ingredient in sunless tanning products. It is often derived from plant sources such as sugar cane. During the 1920's it was first discovered to dye skin by a German scientist after it was spilled on skin.


In 1950, Eva Wittgenstein at the University of Cincinnati did further research with DHA, painting liquid solutions of it onto her own skin. She was able to consistently reproduce the effect, and noted that DHA did not penetrate beyond the dead skin surface layer. Research then continued on DHA's skin coloring effect in relation to treatment for patients suffering from vitiligo.

The skin browning is non-toxic. DHA reacts chemically with the amino acids in the skin, which are part of the protein containing keratin layer on the skin surface.

Coppertone introduced the first consumer sunless tanning lotion into the marketplace in the 1960s. . This sunless tanner was called "Quick tan" aka "QT". It was sold as an overnight tanning agent, and other companies followed with similar products. Consumers soon tired of this product due to unattractive results such as orange palms, streaking and poor coloration. Because of the QT experience, many people today still associate sunless tanning with fake-looking orange tans.

In the 1970s the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) added DHA permanently to their list of approved cosmetic ingredients. DHA does not damage the skin, and is considered a safe skin coloring agent and nutritional supplement.

Spray tans don't HAVE to turn out orange!

 There are so many rumors about spray tanning/sunless tanning turning people orange.... and while sure, I suppose it does turn some people orange. It NEVER will, when applied correctly and using the correct type of sunless tanner. The tricky part is that no one brand of solution will work for everyone. For example and like I have said before, Norvell is great for people who already have a little bit of color, but use that on a very fair girl with red hair, and yes, she will turn orange! Some spray tanning salons only carry one brand! That clearly isn't going to make every customer have a perfect tan! Cali Color Spray Tanning has five different brands of solutions and every brand have varying colors!

 *Alcohol based tanning solutions also tend to dry out skin and typically just have a very orange-y undertone to them. They are, in my opinion best to avoid!

 *Also, don't try to go too dark too fast. Gradually over time and after a few spray tanning sessions you will get darker, but going too dark too fast will turn you orange! Additionally, when the tan starts to fade it will be very brutal.

Here is what it is:

 A group of girls, five at least, get together at your house, hotel, or office and everyone is tanned in one convenient session! It is a perfect way to get ready for a Special Occasion, Swimsuit Competitions, Pre-prom, Bachelorette parties or even to just put a fun twist on girls night in!

How it works:

A Spray Tan tech will arrive at your location and set up a pop up tent. This is where every girl will stand while they are getting tanned to avoid any over spray. It takes about 15-20 minutes per application.
*Most of the Spray Tanning companies I have talked to about this actually offer a free spray to the host (Including Cali Color Spray Tanning) Talk about a fun way to save money!
