Thinking about getting your first spray tan?

A few years ago I decided to get my first spray tan. Little did I know I came completely unprepared and messed my own tan up! It happened to be raining the day I got my first spray tan and I walked out side with out and umbrella. The rain hit my arms and legs and lets just say, I looked like a leopard for a little over a week... So here are a few things I think are important to know before you go!

When you are searching for the salon to go to for your sunless tan, look for a place that offer more than just one brand of solution. Everybody has different skin types. Airbrush tanning is essentially like make-up, one type/brand will not work for everyone. Try to avoid alcohol based solutions, as they tend to turn orange and dry skin out. Drying skin leads to uneven fading.

When you call to book your first spray tan, either with Cali Color Spray Tanning or any other professional airbrushing salon, make sure that it is scheduled for a time when you don't really have too much going on for the next six hours. Yes, you can still go run errands and get all of your stuff done, but you will not want to be wearing tight clothing (like jeans and socks) or being so active that you start to sweat. That might not sound do-able especially when most people have a very busy schedule. But don't worry, most spray tanning salons are open pretty late. It is best to get tanned closer to night time anyway so you can just go to bed and shower in the morning.

Exfoliate, shave, and shower before you go! You shouldn't have any deodorant, perfume, cologne, make-up, lotion, anything! Wear loose fitting clothing and easy to slip into shoes.

At the tanning salon you can typically choose if you want to tan nude or wearing a bathing suit. Do this to your discretion. Some of the bronzers in the solution can dye fabric. A lot of the time though, the salon will offer you disposable undergarments. The reason for the bronzer being in the solution is simply so the spray tan tech can make sure no spots were missed and so you get instant gratification! If you have a special event coming up, like your wedding day, and don't want to risk getting bronzer anywhere there is clear solution that some spray tanning salons carry. If your salon does not carry it, you can either ask them to order it (they will need it again) or you can buy a bottle for yourself and take it to the salon with you.

After the spray tan tech has finished applying the tanning solution, they will either dry you or have you stand in front of a fan. Make sure your tan is completely dry before putting your clothes back on. Always wait to shower 8-10 hours. During this time the Dihydroxyactone (DHA) will be developing. The first shower after a spray tan is a little crazy, it looks like all of your tan is coming off, but again do not worry it is just the bronzer. Remember to moisturize! Moisturizing is the best thing you can do to make your tan last and fade evenly!
